Chapter 19

“How was the party?” Kayla squeals as soon as I walk into the door of my apartment. It’s just like her to be all giddy over an anniversary party. “Holy shit, what happened?” She’s on her feet and running toward me before I can say anything. “Are you okay?”

Esteban and Jesse look up from their video game as Miles comes down the hall.

“Holy shit?” Miles yells. “What the hell happened?

Dammit, I was hoping they wouldn’t notice. Fat chance of that. The swelling is gone. My right eye is dark purple underneath. The left isn’t so bad. Thank God the dipshit didn’t break my nose. It hurt like hell at the time and I deserved every bit of that pain.

Now, my roomies, plus Kayla are hovering around me.

“I take it Meg has a new boyfriend,” Esteban says.

“Fuck you.”

“Aww, shit,” Jesse says. “You’re right, Stevie.” Esteban hates to be called Steve, so it brings me great pleasure right now to hear Jesse poking the bear.

“Fuck you,” he tells Jesse.

Kayla slices her hands through the air. “That’s enough. No one is fucking anyone right now.”

The four of us boys start laughing.

She glares at Esteban. “Keep laughing and no one will be fucking tonight, either.”

“Sorry, babe. As you were,” he says, gesturing for her to go on.

“As I was saying, what the hell happened?”

We sit down at the table and I give them the gory details. I get slapped in the head by Kayla when I tell them what I said about Meg’s ass.

“What a dick move,” Miles says. “I’m disappointed.”

“You’re lucky they all didn’t take turns swinging on you,” Jesse says. “Even I’m not that much of an asshole.”

“All right, all right,” Esteban says. “I know that’s not the end of the story. You apologized, right?”

I finish the story, telling them about how I went to Meg’s. How she was wearing her Berkeley hoodie. And I tell them all about someday. By the time I’m done, I swear Kayla is batting her eyes and fucken Cupid is sitting on her shoulder shooting arrows into the sky.

“I hope it works out for you, buddy,” Esteban says. “But don’t lose your shit again.”

“I’m not,” I tell them. “I got it all under control. I’m—”

“Balanced,” they all say, finishing my sentence.

The guys go back to what they were doing before I arrived with black eyes. Kayla stays with me at the table to talk about my parents’ party.

“Was your mom livid, or what?”

“Not about the shiners ruining her anniversary pictures, but she was pissed about what I said. She would barely talk to me.”

“That sucks. I’m sorry.”

“Today, my dad reminded her about something he did when they were dating. She still won’t tell me what it was. Probably has something to do with sex or else she’d tell me.” I laugh. “She told me she knew better than anyone that boys do dumb shit in the name of love, she just wished the men in her life weren’t so damn stupid.”

“I love your mom,” she says.
